Melissa Dafnis is the owner of The Pet Care Specialist. She has over 14 years experience caring for domestic, exotic, and farm animals including dogs, cats, horses, birds, ferrets, iguanas, alpacas, goats, chickens, llamas, camels, buffalo and more. Her high standards of ethics, kindness, care and professionalism while serving over 300 clients has earned her an impeccable reputation. She continues to increase her knowledge of current and advanced state-of-the-art methods of animal care, training and behavior by attending a variety of seminars and workshops. Melissa is certified as an Animal Care Specialist and in Pet First Aid and CPR. She is experienced giving medications and caring for ill and injured animals, and can administer insulin injections, subcutaneous fluids, eye and ear medications, and more. Her credentials include: a degree in Animal Care Sciences; membership in Pet Sitters International and The Association of Pet Dog Trainers; certifications in Pet First Aid and CPR, Reiki Master, Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation; and Level 1 TTouchTM Animal Companion Training.
A former professional jockey, she has devoted many years to serving animals in need. She served two years as the Executive Director of The Animal Resource Foundation (a local animal welfare organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of animals), and as a member of the Queen Anne's County Animal Control Commission. Her own companion animals have included dogs, cats, ferrets, horses, cockatiels, a rabbit, a goat, a miniature horse, and a rooster.
Deborah Townsend is Melissa's sister and an excellent pet sitter in her own right. She has also been pet sitting for over 14 years and has had a great deal of experience caring for many pets.
She has 3 cats of her own, Star, Oliver, and Max, but considers the many pets she cares for to be members of her own "extended family". Her own companion animals have included dogs, cats, ferrets and a cockatiel.
She takes pride in her reputation as an outstanding pet sitter, and makes sure all the details are taken care of when she visits a home. From taking excellent care of the pets to organizing the mail and sweeping the floor, Deb can be counted on to do a great job.
Deborah is a Reiki 2 Practitioner and is certified in Basic Wildlife Rehabilitation. She participates in helping animal welfare organizations, has an active interest in environmental concerns, and has volunteered for the Chesapeake Wildlife Sanctuary, ARF, Grateful Paws, and Noah's Ark Wildlife Center.
